Lithium–iodine (Li–I 2) batteries are used exclusively in heart pacer applications. The positive electrode consists in poly-2-vinylpyridine (P2VP) polymer with elemental iodine. It forms a conductive charge transfer complex when heated and poured into the cell housing before sealing.
However, identifying a suitable photocathode with excellent iodine capture capabilities for photo-assisted Zn-iodine batteries still remains challenging. In this work, bifunctional BiOI is prepared as sole cathode material for a photo-assisted Zn-iodine battery while simultaneously realizing an iodine host and solar responsiveness.
